"Hey, Katie. Listen to this. You're the bulls-eye, and my arrow never misses," Spencer said, enthusiastically, like a kid who just got a candy bar.
"Who the hell are you supposed to be? Katniss Everdeen?? It is fucking 4 in the morning. Go back to sleep before I kill you," Kate growled, closing her eyes again.
"No," he scoffed, sounding a little offended. "It's Hawkeye."
"Not when you say it like a teenage girl," Kate scoffed, eyes still closed.
"I made a very manly impression if you must know. It was exactly how he says it in the movie. What do you mean I sound like a girl? Really?" Spencer wailed, sounding very similar to a kid whose candy got stolen. He finally turned to look at her to see her reaction. Then he shook his head and whispered, “Son of a bitch.”
Her deep breathing and closed eyes said it all. She hadn’t heard a word. He chuckled lightly, put his hands behind his head and looked at the ceiling. Anyone who listens to any of their conversation would never believe that they were both fully functioning adults, let alone a doctor and a detective. Half the time they sounded like love-sick teenagers and the other half, they sounded like kids on a sugar rush.
As he looked at the ceiling, with the smile still plastered on his face, he couldn't help but think back to when he had first met her.

Kate Sullivan was sitting at the bar, playing with her drink. It was her first night off in over a month. She would have rather spent it in her bed catching up on her sleep. But, no. Her friend, Sophie, dragged her to a bar, hit it off with a stranger, and then, left her to fend for herself in a bar full of hormonal, drunk idiots. She sighed. She knew she should have just pretended to be sick.
"Hit me up with 2 beers, Carl," said a voice beside her.
She turned around to look at the said person. Hot damn. One look at him and anyone could figure out that he was a cop. His posture reeked of authority. He stood erect, broad shoulders straight, steel gray eyes looking straight up ahead with a glint of humor. Well, the gun and the badge helped too.
God bless Captain America, Kate thought.
He turned around abruptly to look at her.
Did I say that out loud? Kate thought, horrified.
"Yep," he replied, grinning. He had a nasty twinkle in his eyes that just screamed trouble.
Kate couldn't control the blush that crept into her cheeks. I need to stop thinking out loud like that.
"Come on. Don't be embarrassed," Spencer chuckled.
"Why not? I just said something really lame!" Kate exclaimed, blushing deeper.
"Nah," Spencer said, dismissing the thought with a shake of his hand, "It was cute."
"It does not make me feel better," Kate grumbled, looking away.
He was in front of her in a flash. Gray eyes pierced into her glassy blue ones. Neither blinked. She gulped and tried to control her alarmingly high heart rate.
"Are you hulk? Cuz you look smashing," he said with a straight face.
Kate burst out laughing. "Now, that makes me feel better," Kate said, in between her laughs. Spencer smiled, took a step back and winked at her.
"Spencer Hughes. Call me Spence," he said, extending his hand.
"Kate Sullivan. Katie, if you will," she said, remnants of a laugh evident in her voice.
Then, the conversation started. They kept talking. No one even glanced towards the clock. They spoke about anything and everything. Kate told him all about her work at the hospital and he told her all about his work as a cop, in the city. They spoke about their future plans, they spoke about their family, they spoke about their friends and they even spoke about their weird exes. At one point, they even had an argument on whose job has most gross stuff. It was one of those conversations that seemed to be endless.
The beer bottles kept piling up in front of them. But, both showed no signs of moving, despite their obvious tiredness and lack of sleep. Spencer's chuckles and Kate's laugh filled up the entire bar. Both of them looked genuinely surprised when Carl the Bartender made the last call for drinks.
Wow. Time flew, huh? Kate thought.
"Yea. You are thinking out loud again," Spencer said, groggily, rubbing his eyes.
"I better get home. I am reaching that point where lack of sleep destroys the filter between my brain and my mouth," Kate giggled, face flushed.
"Well, I was frozen in ice for decades. Don't you wanna stay and help me warm up?" Spence winked, as he took a sip from his beer. A man's got to try, right?
She looked him for a second before she leaned towards him. "Put me in the right mood, and I can be a beast[5] in bed. Literally," Kate whispered in his ear.
He almost choked. "Kate Sullivan," he exclaimed. "Who knew a couple of beers could make you so brave?" Spence said, surprised. He wasn't sure what caught him more off guard: the hulk reference or her outright flirting.
"They don't call me incredible for nothing," Kate giggled, as stood up and walked towards the exit.
Spencer just chuckled and shook his head. He liked drunk Kate. "How am I supposed to call you when I get lonely?" Spencer asked.
Kate turned around and pointed towards the table. Spencer looked at where she pointed, a little bit confused at what she was trying to say. On the table, under a beer bottle, was a 20-dollar bill and a napkin which had her phone number on it. He smirked and turned around.
She was already gone.
"God bless Captain America," he whispered to himself as he took another swing out of his beer.
DISCLAIMER: I do not own Captain America, Hulk or Carl the Bartender. They belong to Marvel and Carter Bayes/Craig Thomas.
All references to movie character are just for fun. I do not own them :)
