Chapter 3: Punny Conversations

Author Note: I was going to write this in the previous chapter, but it seemed too big.
This chapter doesn't concern any fandom.
This is just a bonus for all my awesome subscribers and followers for helping me reach 40k+ reads. Thank you, all!
There is a teeny tiny reference to a TV Series in this.
First one to find it gets a shout out.
Try to guess what the next character is going to be.
First one to guess the correct name will get the chance to name the fandom for IVth Chapter.
Clue: It is someone from Avengers. It is too easy if I say the chapter name. Let's see who gets lucky! Comment on!

Kate Sullivan was busy. Her eyes were scrunched in concentration. She was currently stitching up the arm of a man who thought it was a good idea to play Fruit Ninja in real life. She let out a sigh when she cut the thread and the process was finally done.

She took off her gloves and threw them in the dustbin. She was about to get started on the paperwork when her name was called out through the speakers.

She closed the file she was currently holding, placed them back on the shelf. She took out another file and started walking towards the lobby. She knew what this was about. Earlier today, she had attended a 16-year old girl who had a broken arm. Kate had noticed that the girl had been coming into the ER very frequently and informed the hospital to call the police on suspicion of abuse.

The cops were probably here and wanted to talk to her as she was the attending doctor before they decide whether or not to investigate further. Kate was used to this procedure. This has happened way too many times in the past.

In the lobby, she was met with Officer Morgan who took her statement in detail. She gave the file to him which contained the history of the patient. After getting assurance from Officer Morgan that he would call her with updates on the case, Kate went back to the ER.

She had plenty of paperwork that had to be completed. But, she didn't want to stay in the hospital any longer. So informed her in-charge and took all the files home. She took a shower and changed into pajamas - a black pant along with a gray tank top. She sat comfortably on her sofa with a glass of wine as looked at the amount of paperwork she had to do. When you work in the ER, there is no time to blink or breathe, which is why most of the time there are a lot of backlogs in paperwork, especially in cases that did not require further medical care.

The stack of files she kept on the table was high enough that anyone sitting opposite to her wouldn't be able to see her. She sighed as she took a sip from her glass. Grudgingly, she picked up the top-most file and started reading through it.

It must have been hours since she had looked up from the table. She was frantically writing the report on Fruit Ninja patient when the doorbell rang.

She felt a little confused as she opened the door. Her eyes widened in surprise as she took a look at who was standing in front of her.

Spencer Hughes.

The Officer she had met in the bar the other day. The one she had such a chemistry with. The one who had been flirting with her.

The one who never called her.

She was about to slam the door when he started talking.

"Whoa. Whoa. Easy there. I came here on official business." Spencer chuckled awkwardly, waving a file he was holding.

She glared at him as she opened the door wider, but she didn't let him in.

He looked the same as he had the other day. He wore a suit with his gun and visible. He stood there looking at her with his shirt wrinkled and tie crooked. He stood there with one hand resting on his hips and other hand holding what looked like an official file.

"You forgot to sign your statement earlier today," Spencer said, once he realized she wasn't going to speak.

He opened the file he was holding and showed her where to sign. She put her signature where he had asked and handed the file back to him. Her glare never lessened all the while.

"Dinner?" Spencer asked, throwing her one of his charming grins.

"It's the last meal of the day," Kate replied bluntly.

"I mean, dinner with me? When are you free?" Spencer smirked as he looked at her eyes.

Kate scoffed.

"How about between never and in your dreams?" Kate asked, folding her arms in front of her chest.

"Come on. Any other girl would be thrilled to go out with me." Spencer said, pointedly.

"Why don't you ask those girls then?" Kate said, sighing loudly to show her disinterest.

"Because they are not you," Spencer winked.

Kate just blinked him.

"Says the guy who didn't call me," Kate said, as she went to close the door.

"Whoa. Whoa. Wait a second. I called you," Spencer said.

"I would know if you had called me," Kate said, blankly.

"Does that mean you were waiting for me to call you?" Spencer winked.

Kate rolled her eyes and went to close the door. Again.

"You gave me a wrong number. I thought you were blowing me off. How about that dinner now?" Spencer said, right before the door closed.

"You know, this is harassment. You should arrest yourself," Kate said, smirking, as she opened the door again.

"Says the woman who is not closing the door," Spencer said, with eyebrows raised.

Kate moved to close the door again as Spencer started talking again.

"Can you just point me to a restaurant around here? I am hungry," Spencer sighed and asked.

"Sure. There is a Giant Piere's 2 blocks from here." Kate said, pointing her hand towards the right direction.

"Great. I gotta go submit this report. I will pick you up in 1 hour. Be ready." Spencer said as he turned around and walked back to his car.

He disappeared along with his car before she could even process what had just happened.

The date had actually gone surprisingly well. Spencer tried to get a reservation at Giant Piere's but to no avail. So, both of them ended up eating burgers, fries, and milkshakes at Knight's Diner. Kate didn't mind. In fact, she thought this was much better than ordering some salad which would have cost a lot more for a lot less food. This date was not bad at all. This was just like the other night at the bar. Conversation flowed between as easy as water in a river.

While grabbing the bill, Spencer had accidentally spilled milkshake all over her. Thankfully, he had his gym clothes in the car. Kate ended up wearing a pant that was too long for her and a shirt that was too big for her. Spencer didn't seem to be affected by the new attire.

Before Kate entered the car after dinner, Spencer stopped her.

"Why don't we go for a walk?" he asked her, shrugging.

That was how Kate and Spencer ended up going for a walk on the Brooklyn Bridge at midnight. The night sky was smiling down on them with a thousand shining stars. The air was breezy and chilly, but not too cold. Both of them leaned on the railing and watched the stars that were reflected on the water surface. Amidst the busy city, the river looked calm and serene.

"When do you think we will be meeting next?" Kate asked, still looking at the city lights.

"I have no idea. I am actually going undercover tonight." Spencer sighed.

"Oh," she said, disappointment obvious in her voice. She has watched enough crime shows to know what that meant.

Spencer smirked as he nudged her. "That is, under your cover," he said to her as soon as she turned towards him.

Kate burst out laughing.

"Are you trying to get under my pants, Mr. Hughes?" she said, with a fake astonishment.

"Well, technically my pants," Spencer shrugged.

Kae just gave him a bewildered look that said What?

"You are wearing my pants. Get it?

Kate tried to control her laughter, but in the end, she couldn't. Her laugh was contagious. Soon enough, Spencer chuckled too. She just looked at him in amazement.

She had her date in a small Diner. She was standing on a bridge in sweatpants and an over-sized t-shirt. She was standing with the corniest and punniest man in history.

And, yet, she couldn't stop smiling. She couldn't stop smiling even a little bit.

I am both "stay at bed and read a book/watch a movie all day" and "be spontaneous let's go have icecream at midnight" kinda girl.
