Chapter 4: Classic Thorsday
It was a very normal Thursday evening in Brooklyn. Clack Clack Clack. That was the only sound which vibrated through the silent apartment. Spencer was in Kate's apartment, standing on a short stool, trying to hit a nail into the wall. His clothes were sweaty and his face was scrunched in concentration. He wanted to hang a picture for Kate. But, he was also sure that if he made an ugly hole on her wall, she would hang him instead.
However, the nail seemed adamant about not going into the wall. He gave a small grunt as he brought down the hammer with more force than necessary.
"Ease up on the hammer there, Thor," said a voice, startling him enough to make him drop his hammer.
"Jesus," Spencer exclaimed, as he picked up the hammer again.
Kate laughed as she put her keys on the table, and threw her bag on the couch and headed to the bathroom to change. Seconds later, he could hear the shower running.
"Hey, doctor," Spencer yelled.
The sound of the shower stopped as she yelled, "What?"
"Why don't we have a date night today? Get some dinner, catch a movie, maybe?"
"I am beaten. And I have an early shift tomorrow. Why don't we just get pizza and stay in?" Kate yelled back.
Spencer didn't reply. He sighed as he finished with the nails and plopped down on the couch with a sigh.
Kate came out of the bathroom already in her pajamas. She didn't even glance at him as she went towards the fridge and took out two cold beers. Spencer shook his head, put up a smile and started looking through the numerous menu cards in her drawer. He could feel Kate sitting next to him. He could feel her stare on the top of his head.
He slowly looked up at the menu card with his eyebrows raised.
"What is wrong?" Kate asked, with a very serious look on her face, as she handed him one of the beers.
"Nothing is wrong," Spencer shrugged, taking a sip.
"What is wrong?" Kate asked, again.
"You are like the Bifrost. You pretty much see through everything," Spencer said, as he leaned back and gave her a smile that didn't reach his eyes.
Kate's blue eyes just looked at him intently, urging him to speak.
"Do you think we are gonna burn out?" he asked, after few minutes of awkward silence.
"No?" Kate said, starting at the question. Of all the things in the world, that was the question she least expected. "No," she said again, with more conviction this time. "Why would you even think that?" she asked, incredulously.
Spencer placed the beer on the table and tugged at his hair in frustration. "It's. It's just... We don't go out anymore. And it is just making me a little worried. I just don't want us to fizzle out, you know? When was the last time we had dinner that wasn't take-out?" he said, sighing. The more he spoke, the more he realized how insecure he was being.
He kept waiting for her to laugh but it never came. He slowly turned to look at her. She was just looking at him intently. Her eyebrows were squelched as she thought of an answer. She slowly placed the beer on the table and looked at him, again.
"I don't need fancy things. Anyone can take me to a fancy restaurant and make me feel special. Anyone can look good in a suit. Anyone can say that I am beautiful when I am in a pretty dress. Not everyone can be content with watching Disney movies with me on a Saturday night. Not everyone can look handsome to me with just Spongebob boxers on. Not everyone can look at me like I am beautiful when I am in pajamas. Not everyone can make me feel at home. Not everyone can make me feel so content. Only you can. So, no. We are not burning out. This is what love is," Kate said, her blue eyes growing a shade darker, showing the intensity behind her words.
Spencer gulped. He knew he had to say something. But, there was a lump of happiness in his throat that made it impossible for anyone to get even a sound out. He pulled her against his chest, gave her a kiss on the top of her head and then, rested his cheeks on the top of her head. He sighed in content.
"You do look very cute in this pajamas, but I think you would be more beautiful without it," he said, smirking. His face was void of any worries that bothered him a few minutes before.
Kate laughed as she looked up at him and leaned in. He didn't waste any time. His lips caught hers with an urgency. One hand moved to cup her face while the other moved to support her back. She kissed him back with the same enthusiasm as her hands tugged his hair. When they broke the kiss, both of them were panting and gasping for air.
Both of them were looking at each other like they were seeing other for the first time. Both of them were gasping for air like as if it was their first kiss. Both of them seemed content in the peaceful quietness that surrounded the apartment. That was, until, Kate decided to break the silence.
Kate gasped out, "Honey, it is not Bifrost that sees through everything. It is Heimdall."
